Piloting - special_conditions

I took my UH-14 out for the second test flight.  The trip was part of a talk and demo for a Boy Scout troop.

Before the meeting, I was asked to park the hover at the other end of the field.  It was recently mowed with a very, very slight slope.  I got to the other end of the field with no problem (it was "downhill").  I did notice that the craft was significantly slower and had lots of friction.

When it came time for the demo, I was going to fly up to the boys.  I could not get forward movement.  If I turned around, I could go very slowly (due to the very slight slope).

I was able to move the craft in the "uphill" direction under power while walking beside it.

Is this an indicator of insuffient lift, or is it normal?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Now that the demo is over, I'm going to install my variator.  I'm guessing that having it might have helped.

Thanks,

Rege

Many of our members first began their paid memberships about a year ago and they are now beginning to expire. Unfortunately the program that is in place hasn't sent out early reminders like I had expected. You may be trying to log in and suddenly find out that your membership has expired. The notification suggests to "reactivate" your subscription but unfortunately at this same time doesn't provide an easy way to do this once it has expired. I have begun receiving emails now from members who's memberships have expired and they cannot log in. This also happened to me last night and came completely as a surprise.

I'm trying to correct the problem and apologize for any inconveniences if you have suddenly lost the ability to log in. Your status and content at the site will not be affected by this.

If it's been awhile since you've paid your last membership fee you may want to go and check your subscription status. You can find this by first accessing your "My Profile" page, and then selecting the "Subscription" tab. It should show you the expiration date there and also the possibility of renewing.

Even though the hover will not be running that soon, I decided to go ahead and build the trailer because I'm anticipating a big move at the end of the summer. Also, I'm selling my first hovercraft with its trailer, so without a replacement, I would be without an easy way of picking up large items like sheets of plywood.

I think it has been over a year since I got my Subaru 2.2L, EJ22 engine to run stand alone on the hovercraft engine mount. This engine being fuel injected made that a challanging and interesting part of the build. I learned alot about what is needed to run these engines.

So now at last I have the engine mounted up on the nearly finished craft and can wire it all up. Here is a shot of the harness and gauges as removed from the test run setup.

 We have ignition !!!!

So now I have things all wired up with an alternator light (Thanks Pat), fuel lines and filters in place, radiator hung, plumbed and filled ready for startup, I hope. I am a bit nervous about hooking up the 12 volt juice, thinking a wiring error could fry the whole thing, and then what if it won't start, what then? I am not an engine guru of any sort. Well I have to do it so well see.

Life kinda took over the last couple of years but the as of yet unnamed  beast is slowly coming along. The unusual weather this spring has allowed me to get quite a bit done with the hovercraft project. So I thought I better get back on here and post some pictures and share some updates. Guy was extremely helpful in getting re-registered on the site and letting me continue in the Builders Corner.  The first thing I looked at on the site after many years was the last update made in the spring of 2009. Well this thing has come a long way. Sorry for the lack of updates. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Props and Fans - homebuilt
Written by ola.dal

I see that many hovercraft builders are making their own lift fan and propellers out of wood, which I understand is widely used material for props.
I am planning to make my fans in carbon fiber with a PVC core. The PVC "core Propeller" will be shaped by the use of a CNC router, and then use vacuum bagging for the carbon fiber lay up.

Curiously, it seems like there's been a natural progression through history to blend our modes of transportation for one reason or another. We've been fascinated by the possibility of creating a truly effective amphibious vehicle. Have a look at the following photos and wonder what these guys may have thought if they'd seen one of our hovercrafts in operation.
