The Hiller Flying Platform is what first got me interested in personal flying machines, which led to my interest in hovercraft. This was invented clear back in the 1950s, using a ducted fan shroud and two counter-rotating propellers. It was steered by the pilot just leaning his body in the direction he wanted to go.
