The Home Center Paint Job

Well it has been a time since I have reported on my progress. At long last I got pretty much

everything built, fit and running. Then only to take it all apart for finish prep and

paint...UGGGH  I hate this part!!!

Well it must be done. After getting it all stripped, I sanded some and then gave everything a

coat of  Epoxy as a sealer coat. Next came out the fillers and glazing putty. I then primed it all

with Zinsser "Bullseye 123" primer using a roller. This stuff is water based and sticks well to

epoxy as reported by the makers of the West System products. I had some white tint added to

get things going in the right direction.

Now comes the finish coat. I chose Rustoleum "TopSide" marine enamel and rolled it on with

a foam roller. I went with a semi-gloss and the color white for a base coat in order to minimize

highlighting the imperfections.

I then got out the masking tape and newspapers and went to work making up a sort of stripe

that would give the craft a sense of motion while standing still. I scuffed up the base coat with

"Scotchbrite" pads and reached for some COLOR!!

I used again "Rustoleum", only this time I sprayed it with a rattle can in Signal Red.

The interior and deck step area was again brushed and rolled, with the marine enamel. I

mixed a non-skid additive for the cockpit floor and deck.

Overall I am very happy with the result after applying the paint with a roller...No overspray!

except for the RED, it is everywhere.

I have now painted all the metal parts, and can get back to the fun part of putting it all back

toghther. I have my skirt material and will be going at that soon.

Electrical...Upolstery...Trailer...Will it ever end??

Great progress and great work Greg! I'm looking forward to seeing it in Muscoda
... spring! Yea it's a never ending project and the real kicker is when you
are all done ... then you get to build a trailer. It'll all be worth it though.
I found hovering more fun than I imagined it!

And you are right about the
hover community. I couldn't have done w/o!

Git-R-Done! :-)

We'll have
to some cruising together! There are some pretty cool WI rivers that are
halfway between us. Upper Chippewa and Flambeau come to mind ... I've been on
both.

avatar Thanks Dave

Ya, looks like I need to make it down in June. Hope to be out
before then. I have a trailer now out in the yard, just need to Mod it up. Just
I say??

Shoot me an email sometime...my computer crashed and I
lost all my contacts. That goes for all the rest of you too. I need to rebuild
my contact list with those who are important...Hovercrafters!!!!

avatar Thanks guys for all your favorable comments....I am hoping to make Muscoda this
year, if not June, for sure in Aug.

Gerry, you got me thinking now about
adding the "Northern Exposure" thing to the craft. I am going to a
Graphics shop today in fact.

Marquis,I went with the 123 primer mainly based
on the testing done and adhesion qualities over the West System epoxy. This
primer in intended to use under both Latex and Oil based paints. This is true in
theory anyway. Guess we will move into the "Beta" testing stage on this
paint project.

Thanks again for all your support. This wouldn't be as fun
without the community

Greg,

Looks nice - I am curious as to why you didn't use the Rustoleum marine
topside primer. I'm concerned that you mixed the latex and oil based products.
Hope that doesn't cause you problems later on. One thing that I've learned
about painting is that you have to use a primer that your paint is compatible
with. Learned that the hard way unfortunately.

I just painted an modified 10F
and used the same rustoleum topside product - primer and paint. The primer
really fills well. Neither are cheap though, especially since you can only get
the stuff in quarts.

Once again, looks good. Best of luck with your
build.

avatar Greg,
Paint job looks great. Me being a Mopar guy my mind jumps right to the
stagger stripes on a AAR Cuda. I love that look. Again great job and hope
everything else goes as good.

avatar Hay Greg the craft really looks great I was wondering when we where going to see
a update. Are you going to put the name Northern Enposure on it? I like the name
sure would be nice to see it on the craft. Hope to see you at Muscoda and get
some pictures of it in operation.

Keep up the great work I will be looking

avatar Nope it never ends but thats the good part!! WOW she really looks sweet, really
a nice design and it just looks like you've done a great job on this entire
craft. I just can't wait to see it at Muscoda!! Looks like you could almost be
ready before the ice is gone, now that would be fun!

avatar Wow Greg,

That sure looks nice. Did you have trouble with the foam roller
leaving bubbles? I've had that happen before.

I'll be glad when mine is ready
to paint. I don't have a shop to put it in so it will be this summer sometime -
I hope
