Sanding Print E-mail

I HATE sanding. I have had 7 weeks off of work so far with only one week to go till I go back. I had really hoped to be at the point where I could lay down some primer before I went back. I don't think that's going to happen. It seems as though out of every day I work I spend better than half of it sanding on something. Yesterday I was able to get fiberglass on the most of the seams, which felt good. However that just sets me up for more sanding. Today I spent about 5 hrs prepping the thrust duct for glassing, that's on top of the probably 30+ hrs I already have invested in it. I believe it is almost ready now. Then I can glass it, fill it, and sand again. YEAH! I will have to order some more epoxy soon. I will use up the remainder of what I have tomorrow. I think thats 4.5 gallons so far. I won't need much more, just for filler mainly. I want to say thank you to Dave Lacombe for recommending the 8 oz 2x2 twill cloth. I used it on my lift duct and it layed down beautifuly. I used 3pcs to glass a 30" duct. 2 pcs 38"x15" and one 24"x15". Thats a lot simpler than cutting a bunch of strips. I plan on setting aside 2 nights a week once I go back to work for working on the hover. Maybe in Feb. I can load it up and haul it to my brothers garage for some primer. I don't want all that crap on my floor and he is set up for painting. I want to use a high build primer for the first couple coats. It will get rid of any wood grain and take care of those little blemishes. It doesn't need to be perfect, just damn close. My brother told me I should check out Nason by Dupont. It's their economy line but is supposed to be nice. I probably won't post any updates until I can get to that point.

See ya later,

Jake W.

avatar Hi Jake

Your right it is nice to see up dates on new builds. How is your
craft coming and when do we get a new up date?

avatar Hopefully have her in primer soon, I am so sick of sanding. Last week 6 hrs
straight. Another night of it tomorrow and it should be ready.

Take wax paper and lay it over the seam. Next take a bondo spreader and run it
over the top of the wax paper, working from the middle out to the edge in a
direction parallel to the joint. This does a few things for you:

1. It
presses out extra resin that isn't needed.

2. It works out air bubbles.

3.
Once the resin has cured it pulls off nicely, leaving a nice smooth surface that
is feathered out really well.

It will save a lot of sanding.

I think some of these guys like sanding, but I agree with you.
One thing
that helps me some, is laying poly over any glass. Then you can smooth it with
your hands, the poly helps hold the cloth down, and you can see through it. Just
keep in mind, when your epoxy is wet, the poly sticks to it. Once it is dry, it
comes right off.
Have you considered brushing or rolling your primer on? This
would give you something more to sand. Mike

avatar Mike,
I have used poly in the past and it does work very well. My problem lies
more in the seams and feathering all the edges. Maybe I should roll primer, I
would hate to miss out on any more sanding.
